Established in 1885, Gainesville Fire-Rescue has been serving residents and visitors for over 140 years. We provide a broad spectrum of both emergency and non-emergency services to the citizens and visitors of our community. Those services include fire suppression, emergency management, fire prevention, medical first responder, public safety education and technical rescue operations.

Role Overview:
Looking to serve your community and explore a future in the fire service?
The Fire Explorer Program offers hands-on experience alongside your local firefighters—building skills, confidence, and leadership along the way.
As a Firefighter Explorer, you will:
- Train on basic firefighting and EMS skills
- Assist with station duties and equipment readiness
- Support community events and public education
- Observe emergency operations in a safe, supervised role
- Build teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills
- Hands-on training (scba, hose deployment, ladders, small tools, power equipment)
- Physical fitness activities
This program is about more than learning the job—it’s about becoming part of something bigger and serving your community with purpose.
What Students Should Know Before Applying
- Any special requirements:
- PPE required
- Standing/Walking for long periods
- Lifting requirements
- Confidentiality expectations
- Dress Code: Long pants/jeans, close-toed shoes. T-shirt will be provided.
