Ashley originally started at NCTC in 2001 after graduating high school starting with basics and went down the path of a business degree. After a year of college she got a job working for a multinational retail corporation and later was promoted to an Asset Protection and Compliance Manager. After 16 years in that job Ashley decided to return to school to pursue her dream of becoming a Cosmetologist.

What program or major did you pursue at NCTC, and what inspired that choice?

I started at NCTC in 2001 after graduating high school. I originally wanted to attend the Cosmetology program but instead I decided to start my basics and go down the path of a business degree. After a year of college I got a job working for a multinational retail corporation and later was promoted to an Asset Protection and Compliance Manager. After 16 years in that job I decided to go back to school to pursue my dream of becoming a Cosmetologist.

What drew you to NCTC originally?

Both times that I attended NCTC I lived in Gainesville or Lake Kiowa, I loved that the commute was so close. I also had heard so many great things about NCTC.

Can you describe a class, project, or professor at NCTC that had a lasting impact on you?

I had several Teachers during my time in the cosmetology program that shaped my experience. Mrs. Kerri, Mrs. T, and Mrs. Lindsey. They each had different teaching styles but impactful lessons, that have stuck with me to this day and have been the forefront to my hair business. They also believed in me and gave me confidence to succeed.

Where has your career path taken you since graduating from NCTC?

After graduating I started working immediately in a salon called, Hair It Is. Located in Downtown Gainesville and it is where I currently still work. After graduating I also went back to school to finish my business degree. I have 1 credit class to compete (math) but plan to complete that in the near future. Also 3 years ago I purchased Jazzercise of Gainesville. I own and run the facility and I have 10 Instructors that teach under me in my building.

How did your time at NCTC prepare you for your current role or next steps in education?

I feel like NCTC was absolutely crucial for my career in cosmetology, definitely prepared me and provided me with the tools I needed for my hair career. Also, working towards my business degree has helped me in both of my businesses in different aspects.

What’s one professional accomplishment you're especially proud of?

I’m really proud that I did not to give up on my dream of becoming a cosmetologist. I had an amazing job at the company I was with but it wasn’t my dream career. I was 36 years old when I left my job and decided to go back to school and follow my dream. Some might say that’s too old to start something new, but I’ve always said “you’re never too old, to do what you’ve always wanted to do.” Going back to school was the best decision of my life.

Were you involved in any student organizations, clubs, or activities while at NCTC? How did that shape your experience?

I was not but I did make the deans list and was asked to be apart of the National Honor Society. I worked hard each time I was in school to make A’s and maintain a 4.0 average.

What advice would you give to current or incoming NCTC students?

NCTC is such a great school to attend. Take advantage of what it has to offer.

What does being an NCTC alum mean to you?

I’m so thankful and proud to be an NCTC Alumni. My experience was so great at NCTC and it definitely changed my life. I wish I would followed my dream sooner but I’m so thankful NCTC was there to see me finish it.
