North Central Texas College Awarded $2.8 Million Federal Grant to Help Hispanic Students with Pathways to Completion

Gainesville, TX – North Central Texas College has been awarded $2.8 million over five years to help Hispanic and other low-income students complete college degrees through the Pathways to Completion program. The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Education's Title V Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (DHSI) grant. 64 colleges and universities across the nation were selected, 15 from Texas with a total of $26 million awarded to these institutions.

North Central Texas College (NCTC) is the oldest continuously operating two-year public community college in Texas, and will celebrate its Centennial Anniversary in 2024. NCTC serves a four-county area including Cooke, Montague, and Denton counties, and a portion of Young County. As a recently-designated Hispanic-Serving Institution in 2022, NCTC has both the challenge and the opportunity to expand educational opportunities through implementation of evidence-based services and activities designed to increase success and completion for the college’s large population of Hispanic students, approximately 25% of NCTC total enrollment, and low-income students. The Pathways to Completion program will serve students across the district and service area.

“I am thankful to the US Department of Education for recognizing the great work our institution has done, and will be able to expand upon with the Title V DHSI grant,” said NCTC Project Director and liaison to the U.S. Department of Education Amy Klohn. “This grant and the specific programming will allow us to accelerate and enhance student engagement opportunities and move more students to successful completion.”

The main goals of the grant are to increase NCTC’s capacity to improve academic achievement and completion for students, especially for Hispanic and underserved students; expand professional growth and development opportunities for faculty and staff with emphasis on student engagement and success strategies for Hispanic and other underserved students; and increase access to high-quality data collection and analysis for transparency, accountability, and institutional improvement.

“I’m very proud of the work our staff and faculty have done to serve our Hispanic community and achieve this Hispanic-Serving Institution designation. I appreciate the efforts of our entire team and look forward to what this grant can do for our students, the community and NCTC,” Dr. Brent Wallace, Chancellor, North Central Texas College.
