TECHNICAL WRITING

Technical writing is a type of business writing that differs from creative or academic writing in that technical writers explain, report, instruct, or give direction in the form of reports, executive summaries, proposals, briefs, white papers, manuals, emails, press releases, and infographics.

Industries such as business, engineering, manufacturing, mechanics, corporate, biotechnology, energy, aerospace, finance, information technology, and logistics rely on technical writing to convey clearly complex technical information and processes. Because skilled technical writers often work closely with their colleagues to produce documents that convey information to a variety of audiences, technical writers must be able to collaborate with their colleagues both in-person and remotely. Technical writers also have an ethical responsibility to produce documents that are accurate and timely.

In ENGL 2311: Technical Writing, students both produce and evaluate a variety of technical documents, including short reports, proposals, cover letters and resumes, and manuals and encourage students to collaborate remotely via online platforms and resources, skills that are increasingly in demand as more businesses rely on their employees to work together from different locations.

Because our faculty are committed to eliminating any barriers to our students' success, our technical writing faculty are currently redesigning the course to rely on open-access resources that are publicly available and free online, thanks to the Open Educational Resources (OER) Course Development and Implementation Grant Program from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
