What advice do you have for students?
Don't give up too quickly! College is hard, but that doesn't mean that you can't do hard things. We often learn new skills and insights when we stick it out and face a challenge rather than quitting. If you're having a rough time of it, come and see an advisor. We're your cheerleaders to encourage you to stay in the game!
What is your favorite quote?
In college, my favorite quote was “This, too, shall pass!” I remember several days where I had to get up at 4:30 AM and pull out my laptop and school notes and force my groggy brain to study. Being a student isn't easy. However, it helped me to remember that this is only a seasonal thing—it’s not forever. There is life after college. Hang in there!
What was your favorite subject in high school or college?
Art has always been my favorite subject. It’s funny, though, how we sometimes end up picking a major other than what we love. In fact, I ended up majoring in English, which was a subject I hated with a passion but ended up performing decently in. English often puzzled my brain with all its rules and inconsistencies, but I challenged myself to become better at it. I still love art, though, and I make time to incorporate it into my life. Now I have two subjects that I'm good at…both the opposite of math!
What NCTC student resource do you wish every student knew about?
The Writing Center! I used to work as a professional writing tutor, and I know how dedicated and awesome our NCTC tutors are! Almost all classes require a paper of some sort, so it’s nice to know that you can get help with every step of the writing process, from brainstorming a topic to getting feedback on a draft. Even if you're a great writer, it helps to get someone else’s input on your work.

What advice do you have for students?

What is a random fact people would be surprised to know about you?
I was a coxswain on the University of Texas rowing team

Advice I wish I had heard when I was in college
SLEEP. 8-9 hours. It’s the most important thing you can do. Figure out what time you need to be awake, then count back 9 hours and make sure you’re away from everyone and quieting down. Do that for 4 days in a row and be amazed at your superhuman self. 98 percent of us need between 7-9 hours of sleep a night.
