Mathematics

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics of North Central Texas College. We offer courses which meet the general requirements for Associate Degrees and for transfer and technical programs. More advanced courses prepare students for majoring in the fields of mathematics, science, pre-professional areas, and engineering.

Math Courses

The “Course Request Form” is meant to be a way for students to communicate with the Math Division if there is a course that is not currently offered at one of our campuses that a student is interested in taking. Requesting a course does not ensure that the course will be offered on the desired campus, but it will help us track interest in courses so that we may better determine which courses should be offered. It will also give us a way of contacting those that have shown interest in a course if the course is created.

Testing Rules for Online Classes

In person, on-site proctored testing is required for most online math classes at NCTC. All STEM* Pathway math classes require in person, on-site testing. Some of the non-STEM pathway courses may not require in person testing, but this is up to the instructor for each course. The non-STEM pathway courses include MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics and MATH 1332 Contemporary Math. Refer to the course syllabus for testing information.

On-site testing may be done in an NCTC testing center, at test locations provided by the math division, or at another authorized testing site.

Generally, students will be given a time frame in which they can take their test. The NCTC testing centers can be used during regular business hours. The NCTC math department typically provides testing opportunities for students during some evenings and on the weekend.

Please refer to the course syllabus or instructions within your Canvas course for more detailed information.

*STEM Pathway (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) courses include Math0305 Beginning Algebra, Math1314 College Algebra, Math1316 Trigonometry, Math 1324 Math for Business & Social Sciences, Math 1325 Calculus for Business & Social Science, Math 2412 Precalculus, Math 2413 Calculus 1, Math 2414 Calculus 2.

FAQ

Where are the NCTC testing centers?

NCTC has six campuses across North Texas where testing can be administered. Our campuses are located in Gainesville, Corinth, Flower Mound, Denton, Bowie, and Graham. We encourage students to schedule their tests at the closest testing center.

What if I do not live close to an NCTC campus?

You are welcome to arrange to take your test at another authorized location. Often other colleges and universities have testing centers where you can take your NCTC test for a fee. Sometimes libraries or embassies offer proctored testing as well. Students in the military may be able to arrange testing with a commanding officer. In short, although testing at an NCTC campus is preferred, there are other options for students. Please contact your instructor if you are needing to use one of these options. The course instructor has the final say on what constitutes an authorized testing site.

I am a high school student. Can I test at my high school?

We are usually able to coordinate testing with high schools so that high school students may take their NCTC tests on their high school campus. Please contact your instructor for more information on how to arrange this.

What do I need to bring to the test?

Students need to bring:

  • Photo ID

  • Calculator (type specified by instructor)

  • Pencil/pen

  • Other materials as specified by the instructor

What if I have an appointment, but I need to change my testing day/time?

If you are taking the test at an NCTC testing center, you should contact the testing center in order to change your appointment time. Please do not sign up for multiple test times because seating is limited and a missed appointment may prevent another student from being able to test at the time they need.

If you are testing with an NCTC math division proctor, please contact your instructor and they will coordinate that for you.
