TCCTA announces JobReady certification initiative

Richard Moore, TCCTA | Aug 19, 2020

As community colleges across the state step up to meet the needs of Texans upgrading their skills in the midst of the current economic crisis, the Texas Community College Teachers Association has partnered with JobReady to offer high-quality skills training at an affordable price.

Working in collaboration with local colleges, JobReady hosts an array of online courses aligned with career pathways, many leading to industry-recognized certifications. 180 Skills, SkillSoft, and Harvard Management Mentor are among the libraries of content included in the JobReady platform. For each completed course, learners receive a digital badge powered by Credly, which recommends job opportunities based on skills learned.

"We quickly recognized that NCTC was going to need to play an important role in helping communities in our area get back on their feet," said Brent Wallace, chancellor of North Central Texas College, in Gainesville. "The resources we found through JobReady allowed us to address the needs of our students with training and credentialing to help them be successful. And because this is part of a statewide effort, through TCCTA, we're able to take advantage of substantially discounted prices, which helped dramatically lower the cost for students."

These new online courses offered by NCTC cover a wide range of technical skills, from cyber security to manufacturing, as well as so-called soft skills, like interpersonal communication and time management. "Our goal is to meet our students where they are, and help them to be successful," Dr. Wallace said.

"We saw an opportunity to help colleges across the state respond to the crisis brought on by COVID-19," said Richard Moore, executive director of TCCTA. "Community colleges are essential to the success of our state, and they need resources to accomplish their mission. We're proud to play a role in this effort."

Courses offered at NCTC under this program will be delivered through the Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) department. The goal will be to help students enter, or re-enter, the job market quickly and successfully.
