North Central Texas College (NCTC) Intercollegiate Horse Show (IHSA) Western Team had its first competition of the 2019-2020 season this weekend in Justin, TX. The team competed at the Zone 7 Region 2 season opener hosted by the University of North Texas and Tarleton. NCTC came out Reserve High Point Champion Team, against all the other 4 year universities.

IHSA welcomes beginners through advanced riders in the hunter and Western disciplines to compete individually or on a team. Men & women compete with and against each other. Horses are furnished by host colleges and are chosen by drawing lots. IHSA eliminates the expenses of horse ownership which allows for more students to compete.

Full-time undergraduate students of member colleges, or alumni who competed in the IHSA as undergraduates are eligible to compete. Riders qualify for the National Championship Horse Show (Nationals) through a point system. The contestants who accumulate the most points at their local IHSA shows qualify for the Regional Finals in their respective divisions. The top two riders in each class of the Regional Finals move forward to the Semi Finals.

Divisions range from Walk/Trot to the Open Division for the more experienced riders.

NCTC’s Equestrian Team is a relatively new team with just a few returning students this year. During Show 1 Competition on Saturday, Addie Coutts (CA) and Cailyn Simonis (TX) swept the reining class with 1stand 2ndplaces in the Open Horsemanship.
