NCTC Equine Teams successful at spring shows

Some members of the NCTC Stock Horse Team were invited by the National Reined Cow Horse Association to compete at their 2019 Celebration of Champions Horse Show in Ft Worth, Texas on February 23rd.

Colleges from all over the United States compete in their Intercollegiate Challenge. A collegiate team consists of a three-member team with 1 Non-Pro rider, 1 Ltd. Non-Pro rider and 1 Novice Rider that compete in two contests: rein work and cow work.

Josh Briggs, Rieta Dufurrena and Monty Sperry were selected to represent the 2019 NCTC Team. Josh Briggs won the overall Non-Pro Division, Monty Sperry won the overall Novice Division and Rieta Dufurrena finished reserve overall in the Ltd. Non-Pro Division. The NCTC riders accrued enough points to garner the Overall Team Championship.

The NCTC Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team also came home with awards when they competed for both team and individual honors. This year, the NCTC Show team finished Top 3 in the Region 7, Zone 2 Standings, just behind West Texas A&M and Texas Tech Universities. NCTC is the only community college competing in our Region.

The IHSA encompasses 40 Regions in 8 Zones, with over 400 colleges in 45 states and Canada. There are 10,000 individual members in the organization vying for titles ending up at the National Competition.

NCTC student, Cailyn Simonis, prevailed as one of the top Individual Reining Riders in our region, securing an invitation to compete at the IHSA Semi Finals, hosted by University of Findlay. The Western Semi-Finals represent the final step for IHSA Western teams and individuals on their quest to compete at Nationals. The top 4 riders from Semi Finals will advance on to Nationals, held in Syracuse, NY in May.
