North Central Texas College Chancellor Dr. Brent Wallace was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction, the honor society’s most prestigious award for college presidents.

NCTC PTK advisors, faculty and staff nominated Wallace for his enthusiastic support of PTK throughout his entire tenure at NCTC.

“Dr. Wallace enthusiastically invites advisors and students to attend college board meetings to share their successes with board and cabinet members,” said NCTC PTK Advisor and English Faculty Erica Thompson. “He proudly wears his stole and medal as honorary Psi Iota chapter president at commencement ceremonies and honors graduating Phi Theta Kappa members through individual and printed recognition.”

The mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders. NCTC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Psi Iota, was chartered in February 1972.

“Dr. Wallace creates opportunities for student empowerment by providing an opportunity of open access to all students,” said NCTC Dean of Student Success Mary Martinson. “When serving the college as its chief instruction officer, Dr. Wallace also served as a faculty member, and he was always open to accept all types of students into his classroom and strove to meet them where they were.  It was not uncommon to have him walk a student to the Writing Center, himself, to refer that student to meet with a tutor. He established connections with students by getting to know them and caring about their success.”

The Shirley B. Gordon award is named in honor of PTK’s longest serving Board Chair and a founder and long-time President of Highline Community College in Washington. College presidents and campus chief executive officers, nominated by their PTK chapter, are selected for this award in recognition for their outstanding support of Phi Theta Kappa.

Dr. Wallace was honored on stage at the Phi Theta Kappa Centennial Celebration in Kansas City, MO.
