Janell KupperA scholarship has been established at North Central Texas College in memory of Janell Kupper.

Janell’s husband Jimmy Kupper and family friend Matt VanBaale have established the Janell Kupper Memorial scholarship as a way of honoring Janell and continuing her legacy of helping others.

VanBaale worked for and lived with the Kuppers while in high school and actually attended NCTC, graduating with a degree in Farm and Ranch Mangemebr in 1994. He and his wife of 17 years, Kristen now reside in Iowa, running a dairy operation, and provided the corpus for establishing this scholarship.

“I actually lived with Jimmy and Janell for a few months during my senior year,” said VanBaale. “Janell was very loving and caring to me during that time and went above and beyond for me by letting me in their home when they already had 4 young kids. She and Jimmy both helped guide me towards education when I was a teenager without much direction.”’

After graduating from NCTC, VanBaale went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree and Ph.D. from Kansas State University.

Janell was a graduate of Muenster ISD and a long-time resident of Valley View, Texas. Her spirit of volunteerism was evident to all that knew her, she always wanted to help others, especially kids, and volunteered at many fundraisers.

She was an active member of St. Mary’s Church and was known for sending notes of encouragement, love and sympathy to others.

“We wanted to do something to honor Janell and pay tribute to her and how she was always willing to help others,” added VanBaale. “The scholarship idea came up as a way to help others in the Cooke County area like I was helped in the early 1990’s.”

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the academic year and preference will be given to applicants who are residents of Cooke County, are majoring in education or agriculture, and exhibit a financial need. They can be enrolled full time or part-time.

Individuals can apply for this scholarship now for the 2018-2019 year by going online to scholarships.nctc.edu. The deadline to apply is April 15th.
