“Earning a college education helped my family economically and encouraged my son to further his education after high school.”

Karen Davis serves North Central Texas College as the Bowie Campus Coordinator and she is an NCTC Alumna from the Bowie campus. She earned her Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Technology from NCTC and went on to receive her Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences.

Karen believes that the Bowie Campus has had a major economic impact on the citizens of Montague County and the surrounding area. “The need for higher education and skilled workforce training is essential for this rural population with socioeconomic challenges,” said Karen.

Growing up in poverty, Karen never thought she would have the chance to go to college. After learning about the PELL grant, she was determined, as a single mother, to get a college education in order to provide a better life for her son.

“Earning a college education helped my family economically and encouraged my son to further his education after high school,” said Karen. “Ironically, my son and I both graduated with bachelor degrees at the same time. Earning my degree simultaneously with my son has been my greatest challenge and proudest accomplishment. This was all made possible by North Central Texas College, specifically the Bowie Campus.”

The Bowie students inspire Karen to come to work every day because she “gets to witness access to higher education and help students reach their educational goals.”

Karen encourages students to “keep plugging away at a certificate or degree even if you can only take one course at a time. No one can ever take your education away from you!”
