Both concentration tracks (Accounting and Bookkeeping) will prepare students for meeting the high-demand of the current industry structure while equipping them with a keen eye for detail and superior application methods in real world situations.

Career Outlook:

  • Accountants review, analyze and prepare financial documents, provide advice and may also audit financial statements completed by others. From asset utilization to discovering fraud, and everything in between, accountants have an important role in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations for the company they represent, or the institution they audit.

  • Bookkeepers compute, quantify and record clerical data used to complete a company’s financial records. By utilizing various programs as well as manual calculations, bookkeepers guarantee the correctness of financial entries and proper coding.

ACCOUNTING Program details

Determine the concentration you would like to pursue and then earn an Occupational Skills Award (OSA) and a Level 1 Accounting Certificate on your way to an AAS Accounting Degree at NCTC. 

  • Occupation Skills Award (OSA) courses will prepare you for Quickbooks certification, one of the top-used accounting and bookkeeping software programs in the country. From small businesses to large corporations, this program is a foundational asset to become comfortable with conducting business payments, managing payroll, and more.

  • Credit hours applied to the Level 1 Certificate prepare students for the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers national certification exam. Passing this exam distinguishes students from others and builds credibility within the industry, while also confirming a solid bookkeeping skill set for future employers. 

  • The Accounting Technician (Bookkeeper) AAS Track is for students who have goals of working with a smaller company or a local CPA firm whose clients are primarily small businesses. 

  • Alternatively, the Staff Accountant AAS Track is for students who desire to work at larger corporations with more complex accounting components to oversee and manage.

BOOKKEEPING OSA

Occupational Skills Award (OSA) in accounting is designed to prepare students with the skills needed to obtain the basic QuickBooks certification, explain the accounting cycle, and use accounting software.

Basic Level 1 Bookkeeping Certificate

Upon completion of the Level 1 Workforce Certificate, students will be able to:

  • Identify critical functional areas of accounting, including payroll, and accounting software

  • Utilize software in the accounting cycle for different transactions.

This certificate can be completed totally online. The program is designed to take one semester, or 16 weeks, to complete and consists of the following suggested pathway or course of study.

Accounting AAS — Accounting Technician (Bookkeeper) Track

The Accounting Associate of Applied Science Degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills directly applicable to a career as an Accounting Technician (Bookkeeper) or Staff Accountant. The program is also designed to provide a quality workforce education for positions in various levels of accounting and management. In addition to providing classroom-based coursework, NCTC works with area employers to provide job training and experience to blend theory and practice.

The degree can be completed totally online. The program is designed to take two years to complete. Upon completion of the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Accounting, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate written and oral communication skills appropriate for a business environment.

  • Plan, operate, and maintain an accounting system in business.

  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge in accounting and the role in business.
