Looking for something for your high school age kids to do this summer? Look no further than North Central Texas College! NCTC will be offering free coding and cyber security camps, in Gainesville and Lewisville, for students ages 14 to 21 that will be in 9ththrough 12thgrade in Fall 2019.

NCTC was recently selected to receive the Texas Governor’s Summer Merit Program Grant to provide scholarships for 120 campers to attend week-long summer camps focused on coding for computer information and cyber security technology experiential learning in June and July for area high school students. These MC2Technology Camps (Media for Coding and Cyber Security Camps) will be offered in Denton County and Cooke County.  Two Coding camps and two Cyber Security camps will be offered in southern Denton County at Lewisville’s Responsive Education Solutions charter iSchool Entrepreneurial Academy campus in June.  Additionally, one Coding and one Cyber Security Camp will be offered at the NCTC Gainesville Campus in Cooke County in July.

Each camp will be held from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. All 120 campers will receive a 100% scholarship to attend the camp with a free lunch provided. Transportation to and from the campus is not provided.

A highpoint of the MC2Technology Camps is the on-campus industry field trip experience via a mobile lab that brings to life high-impact experiential learning in STEM concepts through exciting curiosity, building thematic experiences that bridge gender, economic and ability gaps.  Preliminary conceptual themes include the TJ Bot experience for Coding and an Escape Room experience for Cyber Security.  Students in each camp will participate in the BetaBox style learning environment for a three-hour experiential lab that includes 3D printing, laser cutter, Raspberry Pi usage, electronics and other technologies.

“What an amazing opportunity for students to explore new interests, develop new real-world skills, get a taste of college life, and get hands-on experience in Cyber Security and Coding,” said Judy Archer, the MC2Technology Camp Grant Coordinator. “These are two of the highest in-demand technical jobs right now and will be for many more years to come. Taking the time to understand either of the topics in a fun, yet educational environment is an opportunity not to be missed. For many years, NCTC has been a front-runner in providing learning in Cyber Security and Coding, and will continue to be so with summer camps like these.”
