On January 30, 2019, 23 North Central Texas College students traveled to Austin for Community College Day at the Capitol, hosted by the Texas Association of Community Colleges (TACC) and the Texas Association of Community College Marketers (TACCM). This event gives students the opportunity to engage with their elected officials and discuss issues relevant to them and higher education.

“This is the third time I have taken students to Community College Day,” said NCTC Director of Student Life Daisy Garcia. “We have always had a diverse group of students, some that have never seen the Capitol and a few that have never been outside of DFW.”

Four students from NCTC’s Student Government Association (SGA) will get a chance to sit down and talk to legislators with members form NCTC’s District Leadership and the Board of Regents, according to Garcia.

In addition to visits with legislators, students will have the opportunity to hear remarks from higher education leaders as well as interview various state senators and representatives. Students and legislators will discuss legislative priorities for education in 2019 and the issues that ultimately affect students.

“This is more than an everyday trip to the capital, where you learn basic history and government in action,” said NCTC SGA Treasurer Wyatt Rayner. “I am honored and look forward to meeting with our local representatives to talk to them about the many opportunities I have had during my life at NCTC.”
