NCTC Drama auditions for fall production

Elizabeth F. Dieter | Aug 25, 2017

The North Central Texas College Drama Department is hosting auditions for their fall production of “4:48 Psychosis.”

The title of the play derives from the time 4:48 p.m., when Sarah Kane often woke, and examines a person with clinical depression, a disorder from which Sarah Kane, the playwright, suffered.

Rather than claiming that it tries to cover depression as a whole, it might be fairer on the text to say that it is a very subjective presentation of depression, giving the audience an insight into one particular case. Contemplation and discussion of suicide are prominent but treated in a way that is not melodramatic, but is open and frank. Certain issues and events are clearly dealt with: deciding whether to take medication to treat depression, the desires of the depressed mind, the effects and effectiveness of medication, self-harm, suicide and the possible causes of depression.

Up to six adults, age 18 and over, will be needed for this play. Auditions are open to all NCTC students, as well as to community members.

Auditions will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, and Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on the Gainesville campus. The Gainesville campus is located at 1525 W. California Street, Gainesville, TX 76240.

The production will be presented at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on October 6, 7, and 8, 2017 at 7:30 p.m., which is during Mental Illness Awareness Week. It will also be performed at the Medical City Lewisville Grand Theater Recital hall on October 10 and 11, 2017 at 8 p.m. before being performed at Angelo State University as part of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival at the end of October.
