NCTC Drama presents Disney's "The Little Mermaid"

North Central Texas College Drama is gearing up for their Summer musical, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” directed by NCTC Chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department Thom Talbott.

This production will truly take you under the sea with vibrant sets and daring harness scenes, thanks to Technical Director Dan Doss, NCTC Director of Purchasing and Special Projects. For several of the actors, it is their first time to be a play where they get strapped into harnesses and take flight.

“Flying in a play was something new for me, but it has been really fun,” said NCTC Student Hunter Avery who plays Prince Eric. “There was definitely a learning curve at first, but now that we have it down it adds an element that really brings the story to life.”

The cast is full of seasoned performers, new actors, adults and children. Former NCTC Dual-Credit Student Kylie Woodlock, who plays Scuttle, is no stranger to the NCTC stage or to flying on stage. She was in NCTC Drama’s production of Peter Pan in 2007.

“This is such a Disney classic,” said Woodlock. “I’ve seen this play with flying and without and I really think it adds a magical touch.”

The cast and crew have been hard at work since February to prepare for the upcoming performances.

“I’ve been in several plays before, but the big cast, choreography, and elaborate scenery in this play really set it apart,” said NCTC student Arianna Bencid who plays Ariel.

Under the musical direction of NCTC Director of Choral and Keyboard Studies Shane Studdard, the cast has learned many classic songs from the movie version of “The Little Mermaid,” along with some new songs for the stage version.

Tickets are on sale now for performances on June 16, 17, 22, 23, and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and one performance on June 25 at 2:30 p.m., all at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on the NCTC Gainesville campus.

Tickets are $10 for Adults and $5 for Youth; NCTC students can get in free with their Student ID. Call 940-668-3355 for tickets.

“We are so excited to bring this iconic Disney movie to the stage in North Texas,” said Talbott. “We have some incredibly talented actors and can’t wait to share this with the community.”
