Dr. Gilbert named to Board of Directors of TCCIA

Dr. Larry Gilbert, the Dean of Instruction on the North Central Texas College Corinth campus, was recently elected to the 2015-16 Board of Directors for the Texas Community College Instructional Administrators (TCCIA).

Larry GilbertDr. Gilbert's career in education includes six years of public school teaching and 32-plus years of community college teaching and administration. In addition to 22 years of teaching American History and Learning Frameworks classes, he has served as an instructional leader in administrative positions at two different colleges before joining NCTC as Dean of Arts and Sciences in 2001.

A native East Texan, Dr. Gilbert graduated from Kilgore High School where he was awarded an athletic scholarship to Texas Tech University. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969 and was recognized on the Dean's List, Tech Salutes, and also served his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, as the Community Service Chairman that was recognized nationally with the Harvard Trophy. Dr. Gilbert also earned consensus All-Southwest Conference and All-American (AP) 2nd team honors as a wide receiver at Tech. Dr. Gilbert has also been inducted into the Kilgore High School Hall of Honor and into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame.

Dr. Gilbert graduated from USAF Officer Training School, commissioned as a 2nd Lt., in 1970. He successfully earned the aeronautical rating of Pilot, USAF, at Craig AFB in Selma, Ala., in 1971. He served two tours in Vietnam as an Aircraft Commander of a KC - 135 Jet - Tanker, earning the Air Medal for combat and received an Honorable Discharge from the USAF with the rank of Captain in 1976.

While teaching six years in the public schools of Texas from 1976-1982, he earned his Master's of Education degree from Tarleton State University in 1979. Dr. Gilbert began his community college career after his selection as Dean of Clarendon College - Pampa Center. He served as the Dean from 1982-1991 with the responsibilities for instructional leadership of all Academic, Vocational/Technical, and Continuing Education programs. He also provided leadership for all campus operations including admissions, student services and was responsible for community relations for the college. He also found time to teach American History classes for six years.

While completing his Doctoral degree (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Administration from Texas Tech University in 1992, Dr. Gilbert was hired as the Dean of the Navarro College - Ellis County Center in Waxahachie, serving from 1991-2001. His duties include Chief Instructional Officer, responsible for all Academic, Technical, Continuing Ed programs and instructional leader for all faculty. Also was the responsible for all operations of the Ellis Center including all services of a comprehensive community college. He also taught Learning Frameworks classes in the Psychology Department for 10 years.

Dr. Gilbert was hired as NCTC's Dean of Arts & Sciences in 2001 and is currently serving as the Dean of Instruction - Corinth Campus with instructional leadership over eight academic departments system wide.

"I have always enjoyed the various administrative responsibilities as a Dean of off-campus centers in a community college setting, but my first love is teaching and the opportunity to join NCTC as a Dean of Instruction is my dream position as I believe we can make a difference in each student's success at NCTC," he said.
