GAINESVILLE - The children of Gerald and Verena Metzler have found a way to honor their late parents while helping Cooke County students receive an education at the same time.

Jerry Metzler, Debbie Voth, Roy Metzler and Mark Metzler and their families recently donated $13,500 to the North Central Texas College Foundation to establish the Gerald and Verena Metzler Scholarship Fund.

"I greatly admire my parents for what they accomplished from humble beginnings with limited resources," Voth said. "They helped build a successful business, ran a productive farm and contributed to the community mostly with common sense and a high school diploma, but they recognized the value of higher education and supported NCTC. I want to honor them with a practical legacy that rewards the initiative, integrity and exceptional work ethic they demonstrated in their lives."

The donation will fund scholarships for graduates of Lindsay or Sacred Heart High School who have a 3.5 or higher GPA and are majoring in business, education, agriculture or nursing/healthcare.

"Our parents believed strongly in helping people who help themselves," Jerry Metzler said. "This is the best way I can think of to honor their memory by supporting NCTC students who are using education to improve their lives."
