Personal beauty care and hygiene will be the focus of a brand new youth summer camp offered at North Central Texas College in June.
The Young Ladies Cosmetology Summer Camp will be held on two days for girls ages 8-13. The first camp will be Tuesday, June 17 and the second camp will be Thursday, June 19. Both camps will run from 1 to 4:30 p.m. each day. Cost of the camp is $20 and each clinic is limited to 10 participants.
Shirley Meek, the NCTC Cosmetology Program Coordinator says the new camp will provide a personalized afternoon of salon service for each participant and will teach them the basics of personal hygiene.
“I think offering the summer camp for young ladies is an eye-opener to maybe some hygiene steps they should be starting to perform themselves,” Meek said. “At age 8 to 13, that is sort of a growing time for them and awareness of their bodies. It helps them to realize that they can shampoo, blow dry and style their hair at home. We will teach them how to keep their hands clean. It teaches them how to do personal care for themselves.”
In addition to an overall introduction to cosmetology and personal care, each participant will receive a shampoo, blow dry and styling, as well as a manicure and facial. All services will be provided by NCTC Cosmetology students.
Campers will also take home more than just knowledge.
“The goody bags that we are going to give out will include some small personal-care items, but we will also include some information about our programs that they can take home and maybe a family member will read it and it will publicize our program a little more through this summer camp,” Meek added.
An application form and waiver form can be downloaded at www.nctc.edu/cosmetology or they can be picked up at the NCTC Cosmetology office.
