NCTC MATH INSTRUCTOR SELECTED FOR NATIONAL RECOGNITION

GAINESVILLE, TEXAS – Elizabeth Howell of North Central Texas College is one of only 24 instructors in the nation selected to attend a prestigious professional development and mentoring program for two-year college mathematics faculty.
Howell is chair of the College Preparatory Studies Department and teaches college prep math courses at the NCTC Corinth Campus.
“This is a singular and very significant honor,“ said Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, vice president of instruction, “and it certainly points to the effort we’re making to put the very best, most qualified instructors we can find in the classroom for our students.
“It also points to our ongoing commitment to encouraging a continuous process of professional development and improvement among our faculty.”
The program Howell will attend is “Advancing Community College Careers: Education, Scholarship and Service,” sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Access program.
The goal of the project is to facilitate current and continued professional growth for a cadre of two-year college mathematics faculty, in the first three years of their full-time professional careers, who will become the leaders of their profession.
“I’m tremendously honored to have been chosen, of course,” Howell said, “but more important is the opportunity it gives me to become better at something I absolutely love doing—teaching math.
”And I have found teaching at the community college level to be enormously rewarding. I love being able to help students reach their goals, especially when math has been a daunting hurdle for them in the past.”
Howell added that another great benefit of the program will be meeting and sharing ideas and experiences with other teachers from across the country.
Now in her third year of full-time teaching at NCTC, Howell was previously a Visiting Scholar in the Dallas County Community Colleges and also an adjunct instructor at both Collin County and Tarrant County community colleges. She also taught high school at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch and Coppell ISDs.
“Another mark of a truly outstanding teacher is what they do outside the classroom,” said Dr. Nutt, “and Elizabeth has proven herself to be a very capable administrator, deeply caring student mentor, outstanding instructional leader and tireless worker in numerous committee assignments.
“We’re obviously very fortunate to have her on our instructional team, but the most important beneficiaries of her skills, her knowledge and wonderfully positive attitude are her students.”
