MUSICAL COMEDY SHOW COMES TO NCTC
 | | MUSICAL COMEDIAN EVAN WECKSELL | If laughter is indeed the best medicine, students at North Central Texas College will get a big dose on Monday (February 6) with the appearance of musical comedian Evan Wecksell on campus.
Free to NCTC students and open to the general public for a $5 admission, Wecksell’s appearance is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on the main stage of the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts. The program is sponsored by the college’s Student Life Department.
Last year Wecksell performed more than 175 shows across the country and made his television debut on VH1’s “I Love the 80s 3D.” He and representatives of NCTC’s Student Life Department met last fall at a regional campus activities conference.
“After seeing him perform, we knew he would fit well into our spring calendar,” said Kim Brown, student life director. “I think our students and the general public will have a blast! I know our students who’ve already seen him in on stage are excited and eager to see him again.”
Wecksell said he’s excited too and is particularly looking forward to performing in the new performing arts facility at NCTC. “I just hope it still has that new building smell," he quipped.
Known also for his singing and songwriting as well as his wit, Wecksell has put together a musical comedy act that has earned him a reputation as one of the funniest and most energetic performers to emerge from New York’s comedy clubs and musical venues.
Wecksell never considered pursuing a career in comedy until an academic oral presentation on entertainment marketing went strangely awry. Risking his final grade, Evan abandoned his script and resorted to hand puppets and one-liners.
Feedback from the students and professor was unanimous: “Get on stage!” Having learned guitar at Tufts University, the young performer added his musical talent to the equation. The result was a blend of comedy and music that celebrates dysfunctional relationships, endorses unorthodox career paths and makes fun of bad music.
His act has earned Wecksell comparisons to comedic superstars Adam Sandler and Stephen Lynch. Last year, he appeared on the VH1 Network’s “I Love the 80s 3D,” and later this year he will appear on VH1's “I Love Toys.”
