First Year Experience Course

New for Fall 2017

The First Year Experience Course (NCTC 1001) is a one credit, 8 week course (first 8 weeks) designed to provide students with the tools needed to persist and succeed at NCTC. All First-Time in college, even previously enrolled Dual Credit, students are required to enroll in the First Year Experience Course. 

First time college students (excluding current dual credit) are required to pass NCTC 1001 before they complete 15 credit hours at the institution. The course does not satisfy requirements for any degree plan at NCTC, has no prerequisites, and is non-transferable.

During the first eight weeks of Fall & Spring, students are required to participate in this just-in-time targeted class aimed at all new to college students.  The course is free and all materials are provided.

Week 1

Setting up your Lion Pride email account, how to read your syllabus, importance of attendance, My NCTC and CANVAS demonstration

Week 2

Free Gift! Setting up your semester planner [free planner given to each student], managing multiple classes, how to ask for help, meet a coach or advisor, class issues, book issues, and the importance of attendance

Week 3

How to communicate with your instructor, instructor office hours, how to read your syllabus, importance of attendance

Week 4

Time Management, assignment calculator, career information, choosing a major, login information to the College Central Network for job search

Week 5

Importance of Campus safety, Completion CenterCounseling & Testing Center, Student Life.

Week 6

Financial Literacy

Week 7

Tutoring Center and Library Services

Week 8

How to communicate with your instructor, Online Student Success seminars are offered in Canvas to all currently enrolled students ongoing
