Tips for Online Student Success
  • Read all course information carefully. Print a copy of the Syllabus. Make a special note of all assignments and due dates. Also, pay careful attention to submission requirements. If your instructor requires your assignments to be submitted to a drop-box in ANGEL make sure you know which one.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation. Set goals and define a timeline for course participation. Commit your time and energy to staying up-to-date with coursework. It is difficult to catch up once you fall behind. Your online course will take just as much time to complete as traditional on-campus courses.
  • Avoid distractions when you are working on your online course. Find a quiet place to concentrate on your work.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak up and let your instructor know if you are having problems. Early resolution of academic and/or technical difficulties may make the difference in course success or failure. Check the course syllabus for the instructor’s contact information, either email or call your instructor when you need help.
  • Don’t put assignments off to the last minute. Technical difficulties could prevent completion of assignments at the last minute.
  • Routinely logging into ANGEL to check course Announcements and course email should keep you informed of any changes in course work.
  • You are what you write. The online classroom is a ‘faceless’ form of communication. Your instructor and classmates see only what you write. Make sure that your writing is clear and grammatically correct. Never respond in anger. Always allow time to cool down before posting to the classroom. To avoid conflict always think through your written responses before posting them in the online classroom
  • Be willing to share experiences as part of the learning process. Communicate with your instructor and classmates politely and openly. As you build relationships you may find that you learn a great deal from your classmates. Active participation in your course ensures that you get the most out of the class.
  • Keep a back up copy of all assignments and course communications. This may be a hard copy or a digital backup.
