TECA1354 - Growth and Development

A study of the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive factors impacting growth and development of children through adolescence.

Students who successfully complete TECA 1354 will be able to:

  • Understand the major educational theories and the strengths and the shortcomings of each.
  • Appreciate research strategies for investigating child development.
  • Know the sequence of child development and the processes that underlie it.
  • Appreciate the impact of context and culture on child development.
  • Understand the joint contributions of biology and environment to development.
  • Sense the interdependency of all domains of development—physical, cognitive, emotional, and social.
  • Appreciate the interrelatedness of theory, research, and applications.

Participation:

Students will participate in group and individual assignments through contributions to discussion boards, preparations for group discussions, individual products and research presentations.

Students will be required to read portions and / or excerpts from the Laura Berk text prior to each session.

Activities:

Weekly, the instructor will post assignments in addition to the chapter quizzes and discussion boards. Activities range from observation of simulations to watching videos to searching for information on the web.

The student will complete one main project for the semester. Throughout the semester, various articles will be posted in the “articles” folder. The student must choose at least 5 articles to read, to write a one-page reflection, and complete an annotated bibliography.

Quizzes and Exam:

One short comprehension quiz each week covering the reading assignments.

The final exam will be the last week of classes and will cover the material from the previous quizzes.

Online Access:

The student will be required to log in to the supplemental website provided by the textbook publisher. Videos, simulations, articles, and an e-book will be available on the supplemental website.
