ONLINE INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION
To teach online and/or hybrid courses at NCTC, an instructor must first be certified to teach online by the eLearning Department. The following three steps comprise the certification process:
Step 1. Introduction to Canvas
Instructor completes Introduction to Canvas. This course is self-paced and automated. It covers tools and features in Canvas, as well as course setup and migration process. Faculty are automatically enrolled in Introduction to Canvas. It is available under the Courses list in Canvas. If you do not see this course under your Courses list, please contact the eCampus Help Desk. On campus Introduction to Canvas sessions are also offered throughout the year; however, faculty must still complete the online assessments in Introduction to Canvas to receive training credit. Check the eLearning Training Schedule for signup information.
Step 2. Recommendation to Teach Online
Recommendation to Teach Online is on file with the eLearning Department. This document represents formal commitment to the certification process by both the faculty member and his or her department chair or program coordinator. The document must be on file to proceed to Step 3.
Step 3. Preparing to Teach Online
Instructor completes Preparing to Teach Online (PTTO). The focus of this training is online pedagogy and course design. Instructors experience online learning from the student perspective. As a capstone to this training, the instructor demonstrates proficiency with Canvas by developing a fully functional instructional module in his or her discipline. PTTO is offered at least once a semester, and takes approximately six weeks to complete. Instructors that have completed an alternate certification program through another institution can request a PTTO waiver; however, they must complete a short waiver module in Canvas that addresses NCTC policies and procedures. Check the eLearning Training Schedule for signup information.
