No more than one entry may be submitted in each division.   Poetry must not exceed 25 lines; the short story must not exceed 1,000 words.

THE BRAD DILL MEMORIAL POETRY AND SHORT STORY CONTESTS

 

No more than one entry may be submitted in each division.   Poetry must not exceed 25 lines; the short story must not exceed 1,500 words.

Only one entry may be submitted, and may not exceed 50 lines.

THE GERALD GREEN GOFORTH MCDANIEL MEMORIAL SHORT STORY CONTEST FOR NCTC STUDENTS

Only one entry may be submitted, and may not exceed 3,500 words.

THE JACK JOYCE MEMORIAL ESSAY CONTEST FOR NCTC STUDENTS

 

The essay should be personal (informal), having no documentation, and should be 500 to 1,500 words long.  

. . . a resident of Texas or Oklahoma who is neither a student nor a professional writer?

THE NCTC REGIONAL POETRY AND SHORT STORY CONTESTS FOR NON-STUDENTS

 

No more than one entry may be submitted in each division.   Poetry must not exceed 50 lines; the short story must not exceed 3,500 words.  

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL ENTRIES:  

•  Originality and good taste in language and subject matter are required.

•  E-mailed entries must be in Microsoft Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf).  

•  Paper entries must be:

  1. Times New Roman or Arial font
  2. Font size 12
  3. Double-spaced
  4. Allow one-inch margins on all sides
  5. Type on one side of the page only 
  6. Multiple-paged entries must have page numbers in the upper-right-hand corner of each page
  7. Attach pages with paper clips, not staples.
  8. Also, please complete the biographical sheet and return it with your entry. Click here for the entry form:Entry Form

Entries which do not comply with all of the above guidelines may be eliminated from the contest.   All paper entries become the property of North Central Texas College and will not be returned.   Winners will be notified by mid-April, 2007.  

 

DEADLINES:  

All entries must be received no later than noon on, Monday. March 10, 2008.   Address entries to Mr. William Hood, Department of English, Speech and Foreign Language (ESFL), North Central Texas College, 1525 West California Street, Gainesville, Texas   76240-4699.

Denton County Foundation Awards

Rix Elizabeth Memorial Award for Literary Excellence in High School and Middle School Students

High School    $100

Middle School $50

The best entries by students from the NCTC Corinth Campus will receive the Denton County Foundation awards (first place, $50; second place, $25; third place, $15)

Also, the Rix Elizabeth Memorial Award for Literary Excellence in High School students [both poetry and short story], with a $100 prize and the Rix Elizabeth Memorial Award for Literary Excellence in Middle School students [both poetry and short story], with a $50 prize; these awards go to students whose entries are deemed to have outstanding literary merit. The awards are given by Karen and Bobby Harrison in honor of their late daughter.

The Ona Roberts Wright Award for Literary Excellence to best prose entry (fiction or essay), with a $100 prize, will be given to the NCTC student whose entry is deemed to have outstanding literary merit.

In addition, the Layuna Hicks Memorial Award for best poetry entry, with a $100 prize, will be given to the NCTC student whose entry is deemed to have outstanding literary merit.

Awards will be presented in a special ceremony on Friday, April 25, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Little Theater at the Gainesville Campus.   The public is invited to attend.  

Prize-winning entries for 2007 may be published as space permits in the 2008 issue of the college literary magazine, The April Perennial.   Copies of The April Perennial for 2007, containing winning entries from the 2006 contests, will be distributed on Awards Day.
