Role and Scope:

Six courses are offered in the discipline of Sociology: Introduction to Sociology, Cultural Diversity, Marriage and Family and Contemporary Social Problems.  The above courses all have an emphasis on teaching students the fundamentals of scientific methodology, questioning their assumptions, and expanding their intellectual horizons.
SOCI 1301 Introduction to Sociology
Introduction to Sociology is the study of the nature of human society, cultural heritage, collective behavior, community and social organizations, the nature of social change, and the methods and processes of social control.
SOCI 1306 Contemporary Social Problems
Contemporary Social Problems is the analysis of current social problems such as crime and delinquency, community problems, race relations, drug addictions, alcohol abuse, over-population, domestic violence, suicide, psychological disorders, etc.
SOCI 2301 Marriage and Family Relationships
Marriage and Family is the study of the problems of mate selection, courtship, conflict resolution, childrearing, common relationship issues, marriage adjustment, divorce and remarriage.
SOCI 2340 Alcohol & Drug Abuse
A comprehensive examination of the history, pharmacology, law, treatment, psychological effects, policy issues and sociological issues related to drug/alocohol use and abuse in the United States and on a global scale.
SOCI 2371 Cultural Diversity
Cultural Diversity is the in-depth study of human diversity in the modern world including race, gender, class, economic stratification, and cross-cultural issues.
SOCI 2371 Special Topics
Comprehensive examination of specific contemporary topics in sociology such as cultural diversity, urbanization, globalization, sociobiology and/or gerontology. (May be repeated for credit as subjects change).
