NORMANDY

This is a picture of the American Cemetary on Omaha Beach located a few miles south of Dog Green Sector. Americans are in charge of the upkeep of the cemetary. There are two American cemetaries in France with this one being the biggest with over 9,000 soldiers.

OMAHA BEACH

This is a picture of the location of Omaha Beach; Sector Charlie & Dog Green. In the beginning of the movie, "Saving Private Ryan," this is the location that the movie is depicting. Today, there is not any commercializing at all along Omaha Beach. It is nice to see that something so sacred and precious is preserved in its original form instead if being turned into some amusement park. Only a few houses and a small restaurant are at this location.
This is a picture of a memorial built by the French to the United States on top of an old German artillery bunker. At the bottom, you can see the top of the metal in which the cannon is housed. The actual cannon is still inside incased by fencing. The barrell is about fifty feet long and could shoot 4 - 6 miles into the water. Due to the effect of this type of artillery, drivers of the LCT's would drop off the men off too soon fearful of the explosions.
This is a picture of the cliffs to give you an example of the daunting and horrifying task that layed upon those young men. Our grandfathers were very brave men.
You can see another German bunker in the foreground. Notice the cliffs along Omaha Beach. Point du Hoc is further down the beach in between Omaha and Utah Beaches. You can see another German bunker in the background in the middle of the cliff back on the left.
This is a view looking down Omaha Beach. To the right, down the beach will be Pointe du Hoc. You can see the hilly terrain that awaited our loved ones. You can still see a German bunker in the hillside. Look on the far left and follow the little road up the hill. It is on the right of the road.
