"Crump", as his
students and colleagues affectionately refer to him,
teaches A&P I and II at the Gainesville campus and
is a highly reputable fixture in the science department
where he has taught for the past 43 years. His most
recognized teaching method is being able to fill a student's
mind with precise anatomical and physiological art created
by fragments of colored sidewalk chalk.
Jim received
his Bachelor's and Master's degree from East Texas State
University in Commerce, Texas and was immediately drafted
into the United States Army. From 1961-1963, he spent
his active military career at the Institute of Pathology
in Washington, D.C. and the Atomic Energy Commission
at Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In August of 1963 in Washington, D.C., he had the firsthand
privilege of watching Martin Luther King deliver his
"I Have a Dream" speech.
Jim's memberships
in civic and professional organizations include being
an active member of Texas Community College Teachers
Association, the ACLU, and Amnesty International. He
is a self-proclaimed "Yellow Dog" Democrat.
Jim enjoys traveling
and hiking and his excursions have taken him from the
Artic to Antarctica. His most passionate hobby is taking
cedar logs and transforming them into unique home furniture,
each piece meticulously sanded and varnished, providing
the future owner with a fine piece of "Crump" history.
His wooden art masterpieces have been the center of
many hot bidding wars at various community related auctions.
Each days ends
almost precisely for Jim as he leaves campus "going
to see a man about a dog".
