Let’s look at ways you can develop good habits, and improve
your marks!
First, find yourself a quiet study area. You will need room to spread
out your books, a good reading light, and a comfortable upright
chair.
Create a picture in which you see yourself "shelving"your
worries and distractions. Turn off the phone.
Instruct family members that this is your study time. Remember,
your future career may depend upon your ability to focus now.
You can enlist the co-operation of children by promising an hour
or two of special time such as a favorite story or game once you
have completed your school work.
Place a simple kitchen timer in an easy-to-view location and ask
the children not to disturb you until it dings.
Do short bursts of work during which you practice "shelving"
or shifting gears. Work for one or two hours then take a 30- to
60- minute break to do something you enjoy. During the breaks, shelve
all thoughts of studying; while studying, shelve all other distracting
thoughts.
Prioritize your studies by dividing material into "need to
know" stuff and "I know this" stuff.
Remember the rule-of-thumb - you will need to spend 3 to 4 hours
studying new material for every hour of class work per week!
Read each chapter at least three times. Your first read-through
is simply to familiarize yourself with the material, and should
be done just before the chapter is taken up in class.
When you read the chapter the second time, highlight and make notes
on the important points.
The third read-through will help to solidify these important points
in your mind.
Have someone question you on the work. Study groups are most useful
at this stage in the learning process.
Understand the objectives for each chapter and make sure you can
meet them. Take the review questions at the end of each chapter
and in your work-book.
Doing practice test questions is the best exercise for your cerebral
muscles!
