Equine Science Course Elective Descriptions

This course will address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and behaviors pertinent to the equine industry and relevant to the professional development of the student.

Advanced equitation skills with topics to include but not limited to; suppling exercises for the horse and rider, ground pole exercises to gain strength, stability, stride length and rhythm. Introductory principles of Dressage and Jumping will be discussed.

Students will develop basic skills needed to become an effective riding instructor. Through classroom and arena exercises students will gain skills in organization, development of lesson plans, and a variety of teaching techniques. Students will be working with first year students. |

32 lecture hours + 112 Laboratory hours ......................... 4 credit hours
Students will develop skill development necessary to fit and groom
livestock in preparation for competition or as a tool in marketing.
Includes proper aspects of feeding, working and grooming with
hands-on activities assigned. This class meets five days a week, in
addition to weekends. Lecture portion of class will emphasize marketing skills
and knowledge of bloodlines and the market at that time.

Basic fundamentals of working and riding a horse for reining will be discussed. Topics include history, development, rules, judging, and the mechanics of working and training a horse for reining. Class will be supplemented with guest speakers from the industry.
