Educators from East Africa Visit NCTC Agriculture

On Wednesday August 19th we had the distinct pleasure of hosting guests who represented many universities from the East Africa countries of Uganda and Tanzania. Our guests were interested in our Agriculture programs and the unique details involved in the operation and delivery of programs of this type within the community college setting in the U.S. Some of the institutions represented did offer some types of Agriculture programs; however, most of them these institutions do not currently offer Agriculture certificate and degree programs. It was an interesting day as we exchanged knowledge, ideas, and specifics of our individual cultural background. We began with a welcome and introduction from NCTC President Dr. Hadlock, followed by a brief welcome and department overview presented by the Agriculture Department Chair, Steve Keith. The guest educators first toured our Horticulture and greenhouse facilities and listened to a presentation by NCTC Horticulture Instructor Ashley Hartman. Our next stop was the Equine Center where our guest had an opportunity to learn about the Texas horse industry, the NCTC Equine Program and our facilities operation from equine instructors Becky Terrell and Bill Kaven and facilities manager Kelly Carr. Our tour continued at the NCTC Experimental Farm where our gusts had an opportunity to explore our farm, demonstration herd of Red Angus Cattle, the bull barn and testing center. Topics of discussion were cattle performance, instructional use of facilities, contribution to community, etc and were presented by Steve Keith with a questions and answer session with our Beef Center Manger Rodney St. John. This was an exciting opportunity for NCTC and we hope our guest learned as much from us as we learned from them. Please enjoy the picture from this event.
