Student Life Learning Outcomes

The Department of Student Life at North Central Texas College strives to create environments that support the intellectual and emotional growth of students. We collaborate with students, faculty and staff to foster a seamless learning experience that promotes Civility, Achievement, Engagement, Character and Independence to develop responsible, caring, and confident life-long learners and citizens. We have designated educational and developmental learning outcomes to define the types of learning opportunities and experiences we will create in order enhance the educational experience for our residence hall students as well as our student organization members. We encourage each student to become a partner in their education by becoming an active leader and learner within their community.

 

Educational and Developmental Desired Learning Outcomes

Civility

Civility is important for college students to develop in order to participate as a positive, active member of any community. Students of the residence halls and involved in student organizations at NCTC, will gain experiences and skills that will further develop them as a civil minded person. 

Students will be able to…

      • Demonstrate respect for self
      • Demonstrate respect for others
      • Demonstrate respect for different ideas and perspectives
      • Develop healthy relationships with others in the community
      • Resolve differences with others appropriately
      • Understand and appreciate the unique contributions of different members within a community
      • Identify how personal actions, behaviors and decisions affect others and a community
      • Respectfully engage in dialogue with others
      • Develop appropriate conflict management skills
      • Articulate thoughts, emotions, ideas, and feedback appropriately
      • Learn about different lifestyles, racial and ethnic backgrounds, morals, and genders
      • Connect with others with different beliefs and backgrounds
      • Identify issues of discrimination within a community
      • Identify personal stereotypes and privilege within a community

Achievement

Academic achievement is central to the student experience in college. Students will develop a sense of pride, excellence, and aspiration in order to take charge of their own learning throughout college and life. We strive to create opportunities, experiences, and resources to assist students in their academic and personal achievement such as study skills, career development, goal setting, and time management.

Students will be able to…

      • Integrate and connect in and out of class learning and experiences
      • Collaborate with peers for increased learning (study groups)
      • Develop an appreciation of learning in order to maximize academic success by spending more time on educationally purposeful activities
      • Identify personal conditions required for effective and supportive learning
      • Distinguish own personal learning style
      • Identify skills, strengths, and interests to align with academic and career plans
      • Demonstrate effective decision making regarding how time is spent and utilized

Character

Developing strong character enables an individual to build the foundation to make decisions in alignment with their values and beliefs. The college experience offers the opportunity to define who they are and they type of person they want to become. It also offers the opportunity to identify the principles that will guide them and their future decisions.

      • Develop an understanding of ethics, and recognize their own ethics
      • Develop an understanding of integrity and learn to practice integrity
      • Identify their values, beliefs and morals
      • Articulate values, beliefs, and morals
      • Understand how decisions and actions reflect personal values and beliefs
      • Understand the consequences of one’s own actions and decisions

Engagement

The college experience is a partnership between the student and the college. The learning and personal development that takes place within the college experience must be fostered through active programming and intrinsic motivation to learn. Participating as an engaged student will enhance the experience and connection to transition as an active member of the community.

      • Understand one’s responsibility in serving as an active citizen of a diverse democracy
      • Articulate and act on personal views with others concerning societal issues (poverty, politics, equality)
      • Identify involvement and service opportunities that align with personal, academic, or career interests
      • Identify effective leadership values and characteristics
      • Challenge opinions, policies, and decisions appropriately
      • Develop personal leadership skills (delegation, problem solving)
      • Serve a larger community through implementation and support of events and activities

Independence

Through the college experience an individual should gain the skills to make responsible decisions regarding one’s health, safety, and personal well-being.

      • Learn to make healthy choices regarding food
      • Learn to make healthy lifestyle choices regarding sex and relationships

      • Discover positive means for dealing with stress
      • Make decisions with appropriate involvement of parents, guardians, friends, and others
      • Demonstrate safe personal behaviors and actions regarding technology
      • Make responsible choices about personal safety
