The Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program aims to encourage students to participate in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs at Texas higher education institutions and to become members of the Texas Army National Guard or the Texas Air Force National Guard, or commissioned officers in any branch of the armed services of the United States. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has begun to receive student nominations from legislators.
As a reminder, students must meet specific requirements in order to be eligible for nomination and receipt of the scholarship. A student may receive a Texas Armed Services Scholarship award not to exceed $10,000 beginning fiscal year 2011. A student is required to enter into an agreement with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to receive the scholarship. If the student does not meet the conditions outlined in the agreement, the award will become a loan and the student will be required to repay the conditional scholarship.
For a student to apply for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program:
- The student will need tobe selected by a Texas Senator or Representative or the Lieutenant Governor or Governor. Students should contacttheir legislator for more information.
- Once selected, the student will receive a Notice of Selection.
- Once the student decidesupon thehigher education institution and corresponding ROTC program in which they will enroll, they must present their Notice of Selection to theinstitution's financial aid office.
- The financial aid office will certify program eligibility to The Higher Education Coordinating Board. Because program eligibilityrequirements include thatthe studentbe enrolled in theinstitution and in the ROTC program at that institution, the financial aid office cannot provide their eligibility certification before those two criteria are met.
