1. Can I take two sophomore English courses during the same semester? Yes, with departmental permission. You may take any two literature courses or Technical writing and a literature as long as ENGL 1302 has already been taken.

2. Can I take more than 18 credit hours during one semester? What does my GPA have to be to take more than 18 credit hours during one semester? Who approves the extra hours? You may take an overload only if your GPA is 3.0 or higher and you have permission from the Director of Counseling and Testing or the appropriate campus Dean or Director.

3. I am THEA exempt and have been in the LVN certificate program and want to change to an AS degree program. Do I have to take the Placement test before I can take ENGL 1301 or any math course? YES, in order for a student to take any English or Math course, he/she is required to take the THEA. If THEA exempt, ACT, SAT, or TAAS scores are also accepted.

4. I've had business math. Can I take College Algebra? You must take prerequisites for College Algebra, or have acceptable scores on the TASP, ACT, SAT or TAAS.

5. I want to take ten hours in Summer I. Why can't I do that? More than seven hours taken during a summer session is considered an overload and must be approved by the Director of Counseling or the appropriate Campus Dean.

6. Who do I see to get into a closed class when it's something I need to graduate this semester? See the head of the department for the course you wish to enroll for approval.

7. How can I get a grade changed that I feel is wrong? Refer to the Student Handbook and the NCTC Catalog under Student Grade Appeal.

8. Can I take the THEA test here at NCTC? Yes. You must specify on your THEA regisgration from that you wish to take the test at NCTC. Our THEA test Code is 141. In addition, Q-THEA tests are given on certain dates at each campus. You may make a reservation by calling the campus counseling center where you wish to test.

9. Do I have to seen an advisor each semester before I register? No, you may register on campus or on-line without seeing an advisor if you have passed THEA, not on probation, and have an academic major. All AAS and certificate majors must see an advisor before registering.

10. Why didn't you release my Placement test scores to my mother when she called? In order to protect confidentiality, no scores or information of that nature is given out over the phone and no information about your scores, grades, etc.. will be given to anyone else. Call the Counseling Center for exceptions.

12. What services are available to persons with disablities? How do I access these services? There are many services available to persons with disabilities. Please contact the ACCESS Coordinator in Corinth or Gainesville for more information. See # 13 for phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

13. Who do I talk to if I need personal counseling? How much does it cost? The Counselors on each campus will provide personal counseling for students enrolled at NCTC at no cost to the student. Counseling is confidential unless there is an exception under the law.

14. What should I do if I am not sure what major I want and/or what kind of career I would like to pursue? The SIGI 3 program provides information concerning careers and majors. It is a computer based guidance and career information program available in the Counseling Center and on the NCTC Website. Just contact anyone in the counseling center for the username and password.

15. I need information abouth the four year insistution to which I am going to transfer. Where can I get this kind of information? The Counseling Center on each campus, your assigned advisor, and the transferring college.

16. I think I am eligible for financial assistance through the Hazelwood Act. How can I find out for sure? Contact NCTC's Financial Aid Office at (940) 668-4242.

17. I think that I can test out of Freshman English and College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus. How do I go about doing this? The CLEP tests are available through the Counseling Center for a fee $ 15.00 to order test and $ 55.00 to take test (total $70 for each test).

18. How many hours will I be allowed to CLEP or test out of? 18 hours

19. Are there any departmental tests I can take for college credit? Yes, contact the department Char of the course you wish to take and the Counseling Center for details.

20. What if I had a class in high school, do I still have to take it in college? YES. High school credit is admissible only for meeting requirements of admission. The only way a class that is taken in high school can count for college credit, is if you were enrolled in the dual credit program, or in a tech-prep program. You may also test out of certain classes.

21. What credit will I get for life experiences? Life expeiences are evaluated by testing in the appropriate area. Testing may be arranged through the Counseling Center.

22. Are there many mature adults that return to school here, or will I be in a class with people who are a lot younger than me? There will be many adult students in the classes. About one-third of all students in the U.S are non-traditional students.

23. How can I determin how much my class will cost? In the NCTC catalog and the class schedule there is a section that explains the fees. You may also visit the business office for more information about your tution and fees.

25. Can I take 18 hours my first semester ant NCTC without taking the THEA? Yes. IF you have high enough ACT, SAT, or TAAS scores that exempt you from the THEA. You may also be grandfathered* (some restrictions) or you may be in a THEA waived program. Contact the Admissions office for your THEA status. *Associate's degree or college credit prior to Fall 1989.

26. I have an 'I', now what? Complete the course work with the instructor. The instructor will change your grade upon completion. Never re-enroll in the class you have an 'I'. You have ONE long semester to complete the course. The 'I' will automatically become and 'F' if the deficiency is not removed during the next long semester.

27. I have never been to college, but I want to start now. What do I need to do? You must go through the admissions process, see a counselor and/or and advisr, do whatever testing is necessary, and then proceed through registration. Contact any Counseling Center for assistance with this process.

28. How can I be sure that the courses I am taking will transfer to a four year college? NCTC has a graduate guarantee program. Working with the equivalencies and catalogs from other institutions will help insure transferablility. Checking with the institution to which you will transfer for their degree requirements is strongly advised. Technical class courses require special approval from the four year institution.

29. How can I be sure that I meet all the requirements to graduate? You should meet with you advisor and submit a degree audit request to the Registrars' office for graduation approval. You may request a degree audit at any time.

30. What is a degree audit? Why do I need one? A degree audit is your degree plan and shows what courses you need to take and how many hours you need for completeion of your degree and graduation. The degree audit may be requested from a counselor, in the admissions office, from you advisor, or you may do it on-line yourself using "Campus Connect". Campus Connect is under Admissions on the NCTC website.

31. What is Campus Connect and how can it benefit me? Campus Connect allows you to go on-line at the NCTC website to see your transcript, class schedule, account status, financial aid status, final grades, and to request your degree audit. During early regisration and at specified times during regular and late registration you my register on-line if you are an academic degree seeking student, have passed THEA, and not on academic probation.

32. What is a G.P.A. and How do I figure it? A student's Grade Point Average is determined by dividing the total grade points earned by the total number of hours attempted. Grades: A = 4 points B= 3 points C= 2 points D= 1 point F = 0 points W= Withdraw (Do not use classes with a "W" in calculation) Example #1: If you take a three credit hour class and earn a grade of "A', you would have 12 grade points (3 credit hours * 4 points). Example # 2:
G.P.A. for the term = 33 (grade ponts) / 10 credit hours= 3.3 G.P.A.

33. What is scholastic Probation? If a student's G.P.A. falls below 2.0 he/she will be put on scholastic probation. He/She has one long semester to bring his/her G.P.A. up to a 2.0 or above.

34. What is academic suspension? If a student's G.P.A. falls below 2.0 and he/she does not bring it up during a Fall or Spring semester, he/she will be put on academic suspension. If the student is put on academic suspension he/she must sit out one long semester (Fall or Spring).

35. Can I appeal this suspension? Yes, you may submit a letter to the Registrar that explains the circumstances and explains how you can bring your G.P.A. up. You may be allowed to enroll in the next semester and not set out a Fall or Spring. See College Handbook for details.

36. Can I appeal a grade? Yes, see college handbook or catalog for procedure. You must follow the procedure exactly as it is in the catalog and/or Handbook. |
