Quick THEA

North Central Texas College offers the Quick THEA for students who have missed the regularly scheduled THEA test. The Quick THEA is usually given before each semester where no THEA test is scheduled. The same time limit, fee (no late fee), and ID requirements are required for Quick THEA as the THEA. An appointment to take the quick THEA can be made, after the testing schedule has been established, by contacting the Counseling Center at the campus where the test will be administered.

Those students who take the Quick THEA and register for college courses without scores are required by state law to take a developmental course if a section of the test is not passed. This law applies even if the scores are not received until after the semester begins. Students should plan to add a developmental class in this situation.

Students who have taken the Quick THEA and do not have scores prior to registration will not be allowed to enroll in the following courses:
ENGL1301, and 1302, HIST1301 and 1302, ENGL2322 and 2323, ENGL2332 AND 2333, ENGL2327 and 2328, GOVT2305 and 2306, PSYC2301, MATH1332, 1314, and 1316.

These classes may only be taken if passing scores on the appropriate section of the THEA (Quick THEA) are on file to the registrar's office prior to the end of late registration. NOTE: The Quick THEA cannot be retaken for 90 days after a student has taken it.

English Placement Guidelines:

  1. Students exempt from THEA testing must provide acceptable scores on ACT, SAT, or the NCTC placement test (COMPASS) before enrolling in their first English course. (See prerequisite for ENGL1301, Grammar and Composition)

  2. Students not subject to THEA may enroll in the first college-level English course (ENGL1301, Grammar and Composition) after acceptable scores on the NCTC placement test (COMPAS), ACT, or SAT are presented.

Note: Once a student takes the THEA the NCTC placement test (COMPASS) score is no longer applicable and the student must provide evidence of a passing score on the writing section of THEA before being allowed to enroll in any college-level English course. If the student is enrolled in a college-level English course and during that semester takes and fails the writing section of the THEA, they may complete that course but may not enroll in a class at the next level. Remediation may also be required during the same semester that the student is enrolled in a college-level English course if they do not pass the writing section.

Mathematics Placement Guidelines:

  1. Students who have taken the THEA test will be placed in the appropriate mathematics class based on their THEA scores.
  2. Students who are THEA-exempt or are enrolled in a THEA-waived certificate program will be placed in their first mathematics class based on placement scores on the ACT, SAT, or the NCTC placement test (COMPASS).
