Developmental Studies

As a comprehensive community college, NCTC is committed to offering quality instruction for a wide range of ability levels. The Division of Developmental Studies offers help to those students who need further development or who wish to review fundamentals of mathematics, reading, and writing.
Sequences of development courses have been designed to prepare students for college-level academic course work. The recommendation to enroll in developmental courses is made on the basis of diagnostic testing. Although these courses do not satisfy any degree requirement, they are designed to assure reasonable student success in the college curriculum. The Division of Developmental Studies exists to remediate deficiencies, in order that students may excel in their chosen careers.

Academic Support Service

The Academic Support Center, located in Room 111 of the ASC Building on the Gainesville Campus, is available for use by all students. Services are also offered at the Corinth and Bowie campuses. Full-time learning specialists are available to assist students on the Gainesville, Corinth, and Bowie campuses as well.
Students have access in the Academic Support Center to self-paced, computer-assisted study aids. The teaching faculty has selected a variety of computer programs for self-study in the basics, for general academic enrichment and for help in very demanding courses. A listing of the available software is in the Academic Support Center, and students are encouraged to examine the list early in the semester.
The Academic Support Center also offers, free of charge, a number of other services to NCTC students including peer tutoring, drop-in tutoring in mathematics and English, word processors for writing papers, study skill audio visuals, tape players, and VCRs.

THEA Preparation

The Learning Center has available the THEA study guides and video tapes to help with the mathematics portion of the THEA test. Developmental courses help students with the skills measured by THEA, and the Academic Support Center provides learning specialists at the Gainesville, Corinth, and Bowie campuses who work with students individually as they prepare for the THEA test. Students wishing to prepare for the THEA test may also take advantage of computer software available in the Learning Center.
