Little Guys Movers, Not So Little Anymore!
As business began to grow from that simple $27 ad, Marcus and Chris realized they needed a partner who knew more about the business side of their venture. They approached their friend, Chad Nichols, who had just completed his MBA at the University of North Texas. The trio visited the NCTC/Small Business Development Center in 1992 for assistance with the legal structure of their business, employee benefits, tax and record keeping information and for assistance getting a loan. The SBDC counselor discouraged borrowing money in the earlier stages of the business and encouraged them to relay on their own resources so as not to incur debt that might hamper growth. The SBDC counselor also introduced them to local networking outlets such as the Chamber of Commerce and business training seminars. Communication between the SBDC and Little Guys Movers continued and over the years as demand for their services increased, they decided to take the business to a new level and incorporated. With continued assistance from the SBDC they wrote a mission statement, made Denton their national headquarters, bought freightliners, added retail box and packing materials outlet, and expanded to four outlets nationwide! They are not typical business owners. Their philosophy as employers is that when you go to work for them you join 'the club.' Consequently, their turnover is nearly nonexistent, and they have promoted e employees through the ranks to managing their San Marcos, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs outlets as well. Watson and Chris Hawley had two pickup trucks and an idea. They
borrowed twenty-seven dollars for a newspaper ad and began the moving
service, Little Guys Movers. Now Little Guys Movers has reached
over two million in sales, employs over 70, and serves four major
cities in two states!
