A Rama - Owners, John Schneider and Mike Herman
When
Mike Herman and John Schneider decided to open a sign shop they
didn't know how to make signs. They just knew they wanted to go
into business together. With this in mind they checked out their
options for operating a franchise. After selecting Sign-A-Rama (which
operates 350 locations worldwide,) they went to a banker for help.
He referred them to the North Central Texas College SBDC.
The SBDC's director, Cathy
Keeler, recommended they conduct a thorough background search on
the franchiser and offered other suggestions about financing and
managing the company.
Keeler, suggested they
write a business plan , discussed incorporating the business with
an attorney, and evaluating finances with an accountant. Keeler
helped them with community demographics and statistics that would
be helpful in writing their business plan. She continued coaching
them until the plan was submitted and the bank approved a line of
credit.
Beyond business planning,
Keeler helped them determine how they would share business management
responsibilities. Mike and John participated in extensive training
at Sign-A Rama's Florida headquarters in preparation for opening
the full service sign company offering illuminated and non-illuminated
interior and exterior signs.
"Keeler's expertise
in these areas assisted in the success of our company." Herman
