NCTC Tennis Lady Lion Press Release!

The NCTC Lady Lion tennis team battled the Seminole State College Trojans on Thursday in Gainesville.  This was NCTC's first home match of the spring and the Lady Lions got off to a strong start by seizing two out of the three doubles matches.  Brittane'e George and Nadia Solomon clenched their second consecutive doubles victory at the #2 doubles position and Kylie George and Betsy Brumley captured a win at the #3 doubles position.  With the Lady Lions leading the Trojans 2-1 entering the singles, there was still much work to be done. Nadia Solomon held off her opponent at the #1 position and finished first giving the Lady Lions a 3-1 lead.  Then Jo'Vonna Gaines and Kylie George defeated their opponents at nearly the same time to clinch the dual match victory for the Lady Lions.  Though NCTC had captured the win, the remaining matches were played out.  Cimen Soy finished her match with a win to give her two consective dual match singles victories.  Brittane'e George and Danielle Cochran also competed hard and ended the day with singles wins.  The final dual match score was 8-1 in favor of the NCTC Lady Lions, thus improving their record to 2-3.  NCTC will face Dallas Baptist University in Dallas on Tuesday, March 4th and Tyler Junior College in Gainesville on March 6th at 3pm.

NCTC Lady Lion Tennis Press Release

            The NCTC Lady Lion tennis team faced off in Durant, Ok on Saturday, February 23rd against NCAA Division II opponent, Southeastern Ok State University (SOSU).  The match marked the grand opening and first match for SOSU at their new tennis facility.  The new facility brought luck to the SOSU savages as they were able to come from behind and win two matches that went into tie-breakers to clinch the victory over the Lady Lions. 

            The battle between the two teams began with doubles and the Lady Lions managed to secure one out of the three doubles matches played.  Lady Lion tennis players, Nadia Solomon and Brittanee’ George secured a victory at the number two doubles position 8-5.  Though NCTC went into the singles play down 1-2, the Lady Lions rallied back quickly with a win at the #1 singles position by Nadia Solomon and at the #2 singles position by Cimen Soy.  This made the score 3-2 in favor of the Lady Lions with 4 matches remaining.  NCTC Freshman, Jo’Vonna Gaines fought hard but wasn’t able to over-come her opponent at the #4 singles position, thus tying up the score 3-3.  However, NCTC freshman, Danielle Cochran, edged out her opponent in a long match that gave the lead back to the Lady Lions. 

With a score of 4-3 in favor of the Lady Lions, the remaining two matches had to go into tiebreakers to decide the team victory.  First off for the Lady Lions was Brittanee’ George at the #5 singles position.  Brittanee’ competed hard to keep the score close, but came up short in the 2nd set tie-break.  The loss for the Lady Lions tied the dual match score up 4-4 and the deciding match came down to the #3 singles position with NCTC’s Kylie George versus SOSO’s Jenny Paine.  Despite dropping the first set 3-6, Kylie rallied back in the second to secure a 5-2 lead.  However, Paine didn’t give up and pushed the set into a tie-breaker at 6 games a piece.  Once again George jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the tie-breaker.  But Paine didn’t go away and played a few big points to rally back despite facing a match point and eventually overcame George with a score of 8-6 in the tie-breaker.   The loss gives the Lady Lions a dual match record of 1-3 for the season.  The Lady Lions will look to improve upon their record this Thursday at home vs. Seminole State University at 2pm.  Admission is free and everyone is invited to come out and cheer on the team to victory.

COLLIN SPRING OPEN AND TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE MATCH RECAP

            The NCTC Lady Lion tennis team (ranked 5th nationally) opened up its spring dual match season in Tyler on Tuesday against the Tyler Junior College Apaches (ranked 2nd nationally).  The two junior college tennis power houses began the match with three doubles matches.  Two out of the three doubles were neck and neck the entire way.  However, the Apaches edged out the Lions and clenched all three doubles for a 3-0 lead in dual match play going into singles.  The Lady Lions started strong in the singles and rallied initially in several matches to keep the scores close.  But the Lady Lions eventually fell short of the needed singles victories.  Sophomore, Nadia Solomon, was the only Lady Lion to seize a victory over the Apaches at the #1 singles position.  The final dual match score was 1-8 in favor of Tyler. 

            Though this was the first dual match for the Lady Lions of the spring, they competed in the Collin Spring Open on February 8-9 in Plano.  This tournament was flighted in singles and doubles and geared to give the players a lot of match play to prepare them for the upcoming dual matches.  Highlights of the Collin Spring Open included a 2nd place finish in flight #2 singles by freshman Lady Lion, Jo’Vonna Gaines of Little Elm.  Nadia Solomon and Brittanee’ George also won their consolation singles brackets and won the consolation doubles bracket.  The Lady Lions will be back in action Saturday, February 23rd in Durant, as they battle Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
